Swam Deers at Jhilmil Jheel Wetland

🦌 Swamp Deer of Jhilmil Jheel – The Pride of Uttarakhand Wetlands 🌿

Hidden within the lush marshlands of the beautiful Jhilmil Jheel Conservation Reserve lives one of India’s rarest and most majestic deer species — the Swamp Deer, also known as Barasingha.

Jhilmil Jheel is the only surviving natural habitat of Swamp Deer in Uttarakhand and one of the last remaining wetland ecosystems for this species in North India. These elegant herbivores are famous for their magnificent multi-tined antlers, which often appear to have twelve branches, giving them the name “Barasingha” meaning “twelve-horned deer.” 🦌✨

The reserve’s marshy grasslands, seasonal wetlands, and dense Terai vegetation provide the perfect habitat for these shy animals. Swamp Deer spend much of their time grazing in grasslands, resting near water bodies, and moving quietly through wetland vegetation. Their presence indicates a healthy and thriving ecosystem.

Once facing severe habitat loss and population decline, the Swamp Deer population at Jhilmil Jheel has become an inspiring example of wildlife conservation and habitat protection. Conservation efforts by forest authorities and local communities have helped protect this vulnerable species and its fragile wetland home.

Apart from Swamp Deer, Jhilmil Jheel is also home to elephants, leopards, nilgai, migratory birds, crocodiles, and rich biodiversity, making it a paradise for wildlife lovers and nature photographers.

Visiting Jhilmil Jheel offers a rare opportunity to witness Barasingha in their natural wetland habitat while experiencing the untouched beauty of Uttarakhand’s Terai wilderness.
