Bar headed Geese

Bar-headed Goose (Anser indicus), locally known as Rajhans or Chakwa-Chakwi. It is one of the most extraordinary migratory birds in the world and is a regular winter visitor to Jhilmil Jheel.

  • The Bar-headed Goose is easily recognized by the two black stripes on its white head and its graceful grey body.
  • These birds undertake one of the world’s highest migrations, crossing the Himalayas and flying at altitudes exceeding 7,000 meters (23,000 feet), where oxygen levels are extremely low.
  • They breed in high-altitude regions such as Tibet, Mongolia, and Ladakh and migrate to India’s wetlands during winter in search of food and shelter.
  • Jhilmil Jheel is one of the important wetlands in Uttarakhand where these majestic birds can be observed every year.
  • The wetland is also home to many other migratory and resident bird species, making it a paradise for birdwatchers and nature lovers.

Jhilmil Jheel is the last major untouched Terai marshland in Uttarakhand and is also famous for its herd of Barasingha, rich wetlands, and peaceful natural surroundings
